đź’ Patients come with a story in mind. Your best chance of solving their problem (and performing well in exams) is to get a full understanding of their story.
Early chatter and interruption can break the patients train of thought, resulting in poor quality story. Consequently, it takes longer to understand the problem and it is harder to solve.
‍
❓Do you distract patients with too much chatter early on?
❓Do you keep your intros brief and welcoming to maintain train of thought?
❓Do your traces show early interruptions?
‍
In the exam, cases are designed to be doable in the 12 minutes provided, so don't feel anxious about encouraging the role player to talk. When the role player is talking they are revealing critical information from their role player card. They won't lead you down a wrong turn. Listen carefully to understand their problem and you will elicit the data you need to come to the right conclusions.
