Clinical Management is the most commonly failed domain. So Here is a list of the big themes that you must nail if you want to perform well. You can think of them as 9 quick tips to sharpen your SCA performance.
⏱️ 1. Timing is Everything
Key marks are lost because management starts too late. Aim to start management by 6–7 minutes. Long sentences → long consultations → rushed management. Keep phrasing short, language clear and pause regularly to encourage patient interaction.
🛟 2. Safety First ,
Examiners repeatedly flag missed urgency. Ectopic? Suicidal thoughts? Red flags? 👉 In urgent or high risk situations, candidates are expected to be explicit about the urgency and take clear clinical ownership i.e. outline a clear plan that prioritises safety.
📋 3. Clear, Stepwise Plans Win Marks Scattergun plans lose marks.
Try starting with → Clear menu of options → Discussion based on patient preference → Follow up → Safety net.
🧠 4. Share Your Thinking
Candidates often know the right thing but don’t say it! Make your reasoning visible: “Because of X, I’m thinking Y, so the next step is Z.”
🤝 5. Share for Success
Management should feel like a balanced conversation, not a monologue. Let the patient choose!
🧩 6. Be Specific, Not Vague
“Bloods” isn’t enough. “Medication” isn’t enough. Name the test, name the drug, name the dose, name the follow up.
🌍 7. See the Bigger Picture
Safeguarding, work, family, social context — these are not optional extras. Examiners repeatedly flag missing context as unsafe.
💬 8. Keep It Simple (KISS)
