Would you recognise who is at risk?

Community Background: Girls and women from communities that originate from countries where FGM is prevalent. Notable regions include parts of Africa, the Middle East, and Asia. Countries with high prevalence rates include Somalia, Sudan, Nigeria, Egypt, and Indonesia.

Family History: Those who have mothers, sisters, or other family members who have undergone FGM are at higher risk due to cultural and familial pressures to continue the practice.

Cultural and Social Pressures: Individuals residing in or frequently visiting communities that uphold FGM as a cultural or social norm are at increased risk due to societal pressures to conform.

Lack of Awareness: Families and communities with limited awareness of the legal implications and health risks associated with FGM may be more likely to perpetuate the practice.

Visits Abroad: Girls who are at risk may face increased danger during trips to their family’s country of origin, especially during extended vacations where FGM ceremonies are sometimes arranged.

💡 Legal Framework:

In the UK, FGM is illegal. For girls under 18, it's mandatory for healthcare professionals to report known cases to the police as it is considered child abuse. Adults over 18 should also be safeguarded, and while there's no duty to report, support and advice should be provided.

📣 Mandatory Reporting:

As a GP, if you identify a case of FGM in anyone under 18, you must report it to the police, following the statutory duty.

🤝 Support Networks:

Provide access to psychological support and community groups. For instance, signposting to organisations such as NHS support services or charities like the NSPCC.
