Examiners suggest not, as you can’t solve the problem without adequate time for a management discussion!
Once you have listened and feel you have a good understanding of the problem be prepared to step in, politely interrupting if necessary. If possible wait for a pause before stepping in, however, if the pause is not forthcoming and time is ticking be prepared to step in, perhaps whilst the patient has an intake of breath. An effective strategy is
Apologise for interruption, give thanks for the information, and signpost its time to move onto focused questions

Patient: And then she said she thought I was looking tired, and I did feel tired …
Doctor: Sorry to interrupt, and thanks the helpful picture you’ve shared. I’ just like to go over a few points to get them clear in my mind. Have you…
