The SCA is the biggest hurdle you face in becoming a GP so I think you are right in wanting to be well prepared. 📚
A pass in your AKT is an indication you have adequate clinical knowledge. ✅
The SCA challenges you to apply your AKT knowledge whilst communicating effectively. How long you need to prepare depends on your starting point 📍.
If you are naturally an excellent communicator, English is your first language, you have worked and trained in the NHS for many years, get excellent feedback from patients and your educational supervisor then a shorter preparation time is ok.
If you find communication a bit harder and your feedback is more variable then taking longer to prepare is a good plan.
If you are unsure 🤔, may I suggest you err on the side of caution, and take the additional time to record more, get more feedback, improve your confidence and then go for it, with the plan to pass first time.
The exam is testing your performance against the exam standard which can be summarised by the mnemonic KISS 💋 which stands for
• Kind
• Interested
• Safe
• Sees the big picture
Are you showing those key attributes?
Monitor your performance as you consult and by listening back and checking your feedback.
